Trade fairs in North Rhine-Westphalia

With the four large exhibition areas in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen and Dortmund as well as leading international trade fairs, North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the largest and most important trade fair centers in the world. NRW in particular makes Germany the number 1 trade fair location in an international comparison, because with the four large exhibition areas in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen and Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the world's largest trade fair venues - ahead of major cities such as Hanover, Frankfurt am Main, Valencia, Milan, Paris and Chicago.

No less than six million visitors from all over the world come to NRW every year to make contacts at one of the 100 leading international networking trade fairs or to find out about the latest news and trends in an industry sector. Thanks to the state's excellent public infrastructure, including the two major airports in Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn, as well as its central location and dense highway and rail network, world-leading trade fairs have been able to settle here permanently.

Furthermore, NRW has a long tradition as a trade fair location. In Dortmund, for example, where 30 trade fairs are held annually in the Westfalenhallen, the history goes back to 1925. Today, international industry gatherings attract around 700,000 visitors here every year. The trade fair site in Cologne-Deutz was opened as early as 1924. Today, it is the world's fifth-largest trade fair center and is to be further expanded and modernized in the coming years under the banner of Koelnmesse 3.0.

Düsseldorf is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia and the administrative headquarters of the Düsseldorf administrative district. With 629,047 inhabitants as of December 31, 2022, the independent city on the Rhine is the second largest city in the state and the seventh largest city in Germany, behind Cologne.

The Rhine metropolis is one of the five most important, internationally interconnected economic centers in Germany. Düsseldorf is a trade fair city and the headquarters of many listed companies, including the DAX-listed Henkel group. It is also the German location with the highest turnover for auditing, management consulting and clothing fashion, as well as an important financial and stock market center. It is also a leading location for the art trade in Germany.

Düsseldorf has several Rhine ports. Its airport is the intercontinental hub of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is also home to 22 universities, including the Heinrich Heine University and the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Düsseldorf also enjoys national fame for its old town (“longest bar in the world”), its shopping boulevard Königsallee (“Kö”), the Düsseldorf Carnival, the Fortuna Düsseldorf football club and the Düsseldorfer EG ice hockey club. Other attractions include numerous museums and galleries as well as the Rhine promenade and the modern media harbor.

Cologne (kölsch Kölle) is an independent city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with around 1.1 million inhabitants. It is the most populous municipality in the country and the fourth largest in Germany. The city is one of the most important travel destinations in Europe, primarily because of the important Cologne Cathedral and its Romanesque churches as well as other medieval architectural monuments, over 2,000 years of city history, significant events and its cultural and culinary heritage.

Today's metropolis was founded in Roman times under the name Oppidum Ubiorum and became a city in 50 AD as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (Colonia or CCAA for short). The favorable location on the Rhine with the crossing of important west-east trade routes and the seat of secular and especially ecclesiastical power contributed to Cologne's supra-regional reputation in the Holy Roman Empire.

The city is also an important conference and trade fair location: the photo technology fair photokina, the fitness and health fair FIBO, the confectionery fair and the video game fair Gamescom are considered the world's leading trade fairs, and Art Cologne is the oldest art fair in the world.
